Second step resource
Supporting survivors beyond crisis with safe housing and comprehensive care on their journey to independence.
Our mission: supporting survivors beyond crisis
“Second Step Housing is one of the most pressing issues that women face when they are ready to leave emergency shelters.”
— Maria Kokkoris, Coordinator
Since 1991, the Shield of Athena has been dedicated to supporting thousands of victims of conjugal and family violence across Quebec and beyond. Through our emergency shelter, Second-Step Resource, and community-based services, we empower women and children in vulnerable situations to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
One of the greatest challenges survivors face after leaving an emergency shelter is finding secure, affordable housing while continuing to receive the support they need.
Our Second-Step Resource provides longer-term transitional housing for women and their children, offering a safe, stable environment as they move toward independent, violence-free living. In addition to housing, residents benefit from psychosocial support, accompaniment, and personalized programs that foster healing, autonomy, and long-term stability.
As a leading advocate, the Shield of Athena plays a vital role in the community, offers expert insight in the media, and works closely with both provincial and federal governments to strengthen support systems for survivors and improve access to critical resources like Second-Step Housing.
